Watch the systems behind the warning

Preparedness begins before the alert. Learn which local signals show that power, water, communications, fuel or access are losing resilience.

A single outage is an inconvenience. Several weak signals across connected systems can be an early warning. The objective is not to predict disaster; it is to notice shrinking margins early enough to make calm decisions.

Build a local source board

Add your county emergency-management page, municipality, electric utility, water provider, state transportation agency and local public-safety channels. Bookmark the official pages directly; social reposts are a lead, not confirmation.

Indicators worth recording

POWER

Repeated voltage problems, conservation requests, rotating outages, substation incidents and restoration estimates that keep moving.

WATER

Boil notices, pressure loss, unusual conservation orders, pump or treatment failures and wastewater restrictions.

FUEL

Station outages, delivery delays, purchase limits and disruptions affecting generators, heating or transportation.

COMMUNICATIONS

Cellular congestion, broadband failures, damaged towers, unavailable 911 service and gaps between official updates.

ACCESS

Closures, bridge restrictions, flooding, snow, wildfire or congestion that changes travel time to work, care, fuel or a destination.

SUPPLY

Longer repair windows, unavailable parts, repeated service delays and local notices showing that redundancy is shrinking.

Use the three-source rule

  1. Primary source. Find the utility, agency or authority responsible for the system.
  2. Independent confirmation. Compare a second credible source, direct observation or another official notice.
  3. Household effect. Translate the event into runtime, access, health, work and decision consequences for your specific household.
  4. Time stamp. Record when the information was issued and when it is supposed to be updated.
  5. Trigger. Connect the verified condition to a written action instead of endlessly refreshing the feed.
OPSEC NOTE

Track public systems without publishing private inventories, backup runtime, property access or the household’s exact weaknesses. Awareness should reduce exposure, not advertise it.

TURN SIGNALS INTO ACTIONWrite clear household thresholds before conditions deteriorate.
